Museum Milestone
By Glynda Pflug
A milestone was reached for Window on the Plains on March 26, 2020, the twentieth anniversary of a groundbreaking held to start a building that would be the new home for the museum.
The ten acres was just a field where cattle had recently roamed, and probably antelope and buffalo many years ago.
That Sunday afternoon twenty years ago, the field was filled with people celebrating the groundbreaking. Buggies, wagons, mules, horses, firetrucks and tractors were scattered around.
Bob Izzard of Amarillo was master of ceremonies. Both County Judge Kari Campbell and Dumas Mayor Rowdy Rhoades had brief remarks. A flag ceremony was conducted by the American Legion.
Marvin Clifton did the actual groundbreaking using a plow pulled by Doug Beck's two mules.
It wasn't long before construction began on the first building. The Art Center joined the museum in 2004 and two barns have been added to the complex.
