Betty Crocker Cookbooks Not Written by a Real Person
The museum has received a collection of items that includes many kitchen items. One of the items is a vintage Betty Crocker cookbook.
Today, cookbooks are not as valuable to a homemaker as they were in the 1960s when I started learning to cook. Today, recipes can quickly be found by looking on the internet. As I was growing up, I had little interest in cooking (other than making fudge occasionally).
When I married, Gunn Brothers savings stamps were given at the local grocery store and I saved those. Actually, I brought them home, but gluing them in the little books was my husband's job.
When I had several stamp books, we would go to the stamp store and "shop".
The most valuable item I bought with stamps (and still have) is my Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook. The book is the second edition published in 1956 by McGraw-Hill Book Co. It has 472 pages filled with step-by-step instructions on preparing delicious food. The recipes are in a 5-ring binder, but the outside covers are barely hanging on. A few pages have recipes written in the margins. Those are my favorites that I don't want to lose. Some of the pages are loose, but it is my "go-to" cookbook if I need a recipe.

The cookbook was promoted as "Your hours in the kitchen will be fewer, lighter, and more enjoyable with the aid of this complete guide to better, easier cooking." The book has over 2,000 tested recipes. It was the second printing of the second edition and was advertised as "improved and revised".
The first Betty Crocker was published in 1950 and sold over 3,500,000 copies.
Betty Crocker was not a real person, but the name was used by General Mills in promoting their products. The name was used beginning in 1921. In 1945, Fortune Magazine named Betty Crocker as the second most popular woman in the United States. Eleanor Roosevelt was named the most popular.
General Mills has published over 250 cookbooks, some featuring one item - like cookies, pies or cakes. Some of the books are specialized such as their International cookbook, entertaining, or cookbooks for kids.
Electronics have taken place of cookbooks in many homes, but I will continue to go to my well-used Betty Crocker cookbook when I have the urge to try a new recipe.
