April 7, 1937 - September 27, 2006

A native of the Texas Panhandle, Don Ray grew up on a cattle ranch near Clarendon.  He moved with his family in the early 1950's to the Happy Hereford Ranch south of Canyon.  He graduated from Canyon High School in 1955 and received  B.S. and M. Ed. in Art from West Texas State University.  He later taught at WTSU.  He worked for the American Quarter Horse Journal and was the first graphic arts director for the regional education service center in Amarillo.  He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963.

Don created art using oil and bronze to depict life on the Panhandle-Plains region, historical events, and landscapes.

Major sculpture commissions include a bronze, The Lesson, for the Lovett Memorial Library in Pampa, Texas, The Harvester for Pampa High school and a bust of Erastus "Deaf" Smith for the Deaf Smith County Courthouse in Hereford, Texas.  He also created sculptures given as recognition to supporters or outgoing officers of several major museums in Texas.

At the time of his death, he was completing a commissioned oil painting of the Battle of Adobe Walls.
